Kevin Boyle, a highly respected high school basketball coach, is making a big change. After spending 14 successful years at Montverde Academy in Florida, he will be moving to Spire Academy in Ohio at the end of the season. Boyle has led his teams to eight national championships in the last 12 years and has coached some of the best players in the game, including future NBA stars.
Boyle’s decision comes as high school and college basketball undergo significant changes. Since 2021, players can earn money by profiting from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). This shift has impacted how young athletes choose their paths to college, where they can now potentially earn substantial income.
“The entire landscape of high school basketball has changed,” Boyle explained. “Players now have more platforms to showcase their skills. There’s heightened interest and new expectations, especially with players having professional representation. The top prospects are eager to find the best ways to grow and promote themselves.”
He believes that Spire Academy’s focus can help adapt to these changes. Boyle thanked Montverde for their support and treasured memories. He arrived at Montverde in 2011, quickly transforming it into a national powerhouse. His coaching tenure has seen numerous future NBA talents, such as Cade Cunningham and Joel Embiid, pass through his hands.
Current players, including Duke star Cooper Flagg and other top prospects, have expressed deep appreciation for Boyle. Flagg called him “the greatest high school coach of all time,” emphasizing how Boyle’s support helped him develop as a player. Other players echoed similar sentiments, wishing for the chance to play under his guidance again.
As Montverde Academy, now at 19-6, prepares for the Nike EYBL Scholastic Tournament, the team aims to secure a spot in the prestigious Chipotle High School National Championship in Indianapolis in April. This could be an exciting end to Boyle’s remarkable tenure at Montverde.
