Quarterback Zach Wilson has officially signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins worth $6 million, with the potential to reach $10 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This contract brings the former Jet back to the AFC East, where he’ll serve as a backup to starter Tua Tagovailoa.
Wilson was drafted second overall by the New York Jets in 2021 but spent last season with the Denver Broncos after they traded for him. The Broncos hoped he could bounce back from his challenges in New York, where he struggled during his three years as a starter.
During his time with the Broncos, Wilson faced stiff competition for the starting job from rookie Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham. Coach Sean Payton eventually narrowed it down to just Nix and Stidham, leaving Wilson as the third-string quarterback. In the preseason finale, he impressed with 251 passing yards and two touchdown passes, along with a rushing touchdown.
Even though Wilson didn’t get any playing time in 2024, he worked hard during practices and became a vital part of the team’s dynamic. His pregame workouts with quarterback coach Davis Webb attracted attention from scouts across the league as he displayed the talent that made him a top draft pick. Nix praised Wilson for his mentorship, noting how helpful his experience was during the rookie’s transition to the NFL.
Wilson’s time with the Jets was rocky. He posted a 12-21 record as a starter, throwing 25 interceptions and 23 touchdown passes while completing just 57% of his passes. His performance led to questions about his leadership, and the Jets eventually allowed him to seek a trade, paving the way for his move to Denver last year.
With this new chapter in Miami, Wilson is slated to support Tagovailoa and work towards revitalizing his career in the NFL.
