Rep. Tony Gonzales from Texas announced his resignation from Congress after five years. This news came just months after he disclosed an affair with a staff member who tragically died by suicide.
In his statement, Gonzales expressed gratitude for serving Texas. He mentioned that “there is a season for everything” and will formally submit his resignation when Congress reconvenes. Surprisingly, this announcement followed Rep. Eric Swalwell’s resignation amid serious allegations of sexual misconduct.
Both representatives faced possible expulsion votes from their colleagues. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández had plans to push for Gonzales’s expulsion but may adjust her approach depending on the timing of his resignation.
Gonzales, a Navy veteran, first entered Congress in 2020. He admitted to the affair after reports surfaced, including troubling text messages. While GOP leaders encouraged him to drop his re-election bid, they were hesitant to call for his resignation until recent allegations against Swalwell surfaced, which brought the issue of sexual misconduct to the forefront.
The House Ethics Committee is currently reviewing Gonzales’s actions to see if he violated any rules regarding relationships with staff. House rules clearly prohibit such relationships, indicating serious concerns about his conduct.
Interestingly, Gonzales was known for advocating border security while sometimes critiquing his party’s immigration strategies. His resignation opens up the competitive seat of Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, a district that has leaned more Republican over the last few years but may be more in play for Democrats now.
Recent elections show a trend of Hispanic voters shifting left, making this race worth watching. National Democrats are already eyeing the seat. GOP candidate Brandon Herrera, known for his strong gun rights stance, has captured attention but also controversy for his past comments and online presence.
Meanwhile, the Democrats are fielding Katy Padilla Stout, a lawyer and former educator. If a special election occurs to fill Gonzales’s remaining term, it could be a competitive contest with multiple candidates from both parties. This will be an important race to follow as dynamics in the district continue to evolve.
