Breaking News: Hancock County Sheriff Resigns Due to Health Concerns

Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam has announced his resignation while in his fourth term. He cited health concerns as the main reason for his decision. His last day in office will be Thursday.

County administrator Jimmie Ladner confirmed that the Board of Supervisors President plans to meet with other supervisors to appoint an interim sheriff. This temporary sheriff will serve until a special election is held in November.

Ladner praised Adam, noting, “Ricky is a good man and has been a good sheriff.” Adam won his fourth term in 2023, beating three opponents in the Republican primary and running unopposed in the general election.

Before he became sheriff in 2011, Adam spent a decade as a Justice Court Judge in Hancock County. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to professional growth, completing over 200 hours of continuing education at the Mississippi Judicial College.

Interestingly, Adam wasn’t always in law enforcement. He began his career as a real estate agent. He graduated from Bay High School and earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

This change in leadership comes during a time when many local law enforcement agencies are facing challenges. According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, nearly 60% of Americans believe that local police departments need significant reforms. This context adds additional weight to Adam’s departure as the community looks ahead to new leadership and potential changes in policing policies.

Public reactions on social media have varied, with many praising Adam’s service and others expressing curiosity about who will take the helm next.

As Hancock County gears up for this transition, the impact of Adam’s resignation on both morale and community safety remains to be seen. For more details on the special election and updates on the new sheriff, keep an eye on local news outlets.
