House Republicans have signaled that they are willing to move forward with a package to end the partial government shutdown. However, they are bracing for a challenging road ahead as they try to achieve bipartisan support to fund the Department of Homeland Security and reform immigration enforcement within two weeks.
Representative Eric Burlison, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, stated he intends to vote against the bill. Even though he won’t block it, he worries that passing a short-term bill may weaken their negotiations with Democrats. “I think in two weeks, we’re going to be taking a lot of the Democrat demands because we have no leverage,” he mentioned. He also suggested that requiring immigration agents to wear body cameras is a fair request.
On the flip side, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis from New York believes some of the Democrats’ demands to reform the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are reasonable. She sees potential for a deal that balances law enforcement, community safety, and the rights of immigrants. Yet, she identifies a significant hurdle: the refusal of some Democratic leaders to cooperate with federal agents. For instance, the mayor of her city, Zohran Mamdani, has pledged to protect undocumented immigrants from ICE actions. Malliotakis argues that if local authorities worked with federal agents, they could address crime more effectively and safely.
GOP leaders have noted that they will push for changes to sanctuary city policies during the negotiations. This issue is pivotal, as it intertwines local and federal law enforcement efforts.
Recent surveys indicate that public opinion on immigration issues remains mixed. According to a 2022 poll by the Pew Research Center, nearly 60% of Americans support a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, highlighting the complexity of this debate.
