Shipping Update: Indian LPG Carriers Cross Strait of Hormuz
Early on a Saturday morning, two Indian ships, the Shivalik and Nanda Devi, successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz. This was a crucial moment for Indian diplomacy, as these vessels carried 92,700 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). They are on their way to ports in Gujarat, Mundra and Kandla, with Shivalik expected to arrive on March 16 and Nanda Devi the following day.
India relies heavily on LPG imports, sourcing about 60% of its needs, primarily from Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for these shipments, and its recent blockade since early March has caused major supply concerns.
Since the onset of regional conflict, many ships have faced delays. Currently, there are still 22 Indian-flagged vessels waiting on the west side of the strait. These include LPG carriers, liquefied natural gas (LNG) ships, and crude oil tankers.
In total, 28 Indian vessels are affected, with 611 crew members onboard. The Ministry of External Affairs is in continuous contact with other nations to ensure the safe passage for vessels in this tense maritime situation. “Our focus remains on maintaining energy security,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Historically, the Strait of Hormuz has always been significant for global trade, and recent events echo the disruptions seen during past regional tensions. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, around 20% of the world’s oil trade passes through this narrow channel.
