David Trone is back in the political arena, aiming to reclaim his former House seat in Maryland. After a challenging Senate run that didn’t pan out in 2024, Trone has announced his candidacy for the House, setting the stage for a tough primary against Rep. April McClain Delaney.
Interestingly, Trone’s past in politics is intertwined with both Delaney and her husband, former Rep. John Delaney. Trone succeeded John, who left Congress for a presidential bid in 2020. This current race highlights a clash between two prominent Maryland families, each with considerable financial resources.
In his previous Senate campaign, Trone poured over $60 million of his own money into the effort. This time, he’s looking to energize voters by positioning himself as a defender of democracy. In a recent social media video, he emphasized his commitment to fighting against former President Trump. He stated that protecting democracy is essential and that it often requires a strong stand.
Trone’s message resonates with some Democrats, particularly those worried about Trump’s influence. He pointed out that complacency can lead to authoritarianism, emphasizing the need for active resistance.
On the other hand, Delaney is not backing down. She has publicly criticized Trone for abandoning the district during his Senate campaign, claiming he embodies a sense of arrogance reminiscent of Trump. Endorsed by Maryland’s Democratic Governor Wes Moore, she argues that it takes more than money to win elections—candidates must also connect with their constituents.
Interestingly, she also noted that Trone has consistently faced female challengers in past races. Delaney remarked on this pattern, suggesting that it reflects a deeper issue with how he conducts his political campaigns.
The primary election is set for June 23. It promises to be a critical point in determining the political landscape in Maryland.
