A break-in occurred at the home of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman just days after she and her husband, Mark, were tragically killed. This shocking incident happened overnight but was only reported to authorities around 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

The police stated that the house had been boarded up for safety after investigators collected evidence. They returned the property to the family but set up cameras outside for additional security. The intruder managed to remove one of the plywood boards covering a window on the side facing Edinburgh Golf Course, then broke a window to gain entry.

Upon entering, the home seemed to have been rummaged through, but family members had already taken valuables after the attack. When they returned, they found nothing was missing.

Geoff Olinyk, a former teacher and neighbor of the Hortmans, expressed outrage over the incident. “It’s absolutely ridiculous that anyone would disrespect their memory like this,” he said.

The Hortmans were believed to have been targeted in a political assassination, leading to a manhunt—the largest in state history. The suspect, Vance Boelter, was later apprehended.

In the days leading up to this break-in, neighbors came together to honor the Hortmans, maintaining their garden and lawn. Sarah Abuisnaineh, a nearby resident, shared how close-knit the community was. “We are a family. Losing her and Mark is just unbelievable.”
