Independent filmmakers in Iran are experiencing severe repression and economic challenges, primarily due to the ongoing war. Top directors express concern that this situation threatens a vital part of global cinema.
Pegah Ahangarani, an actor-director who left Iran in 2022, spoke out at the Cannes Film Festival, a long-time supporter of Iranian cinema. She highlighted a significant underground film movement emerging in recent years. “Many filmmakers are now creating films without authorization and without the requirement of women wearing headscarves,” she noted.
However, Ahangarani emphasized that the situation has worsened. The repression filmmakers face mirrors the struggles of the broader population. “The information we receive indicates an increase in harshness. Conditions are tougher than they’ve ever been,” she said.
Iran has seen a rise in mass arrests and executions since a U.S.-Israeli attack on February 28. This has led to extensive internet censorship, making it difficult for many to communicate and share their work.
Kaveh Farnam, a director based in Dubai and former head of the Iranian Independent Filmmakers Association, shared further insights. He pointed out that rising inflation and internet restrictions have severely impacted the technical staff in the Iranian film industry. “Many people haven’t been able to work for months. They’re struggling financially, with prices going up daily,” he explained.
He added that the war has provided the regime with an excuse to act more aggressively. Recent reports show a significant decline in the number of films produced in Iran, with industry professionals fearing for their future.
The social media landscape also reflects this turmoil. Online platforms have become crucial for filmmakers to share their experiences and advocate for change, despite government crackdowns. Hashtags like #IranianCinema have emerged, rallying international support for these artists.
