Another day, another big contract for the New York Jets.
Just a day after locking in wide receiver Garrett Wilson, the Jets rewarded cornerback Sauce Gardner with an impressive four-year extension worth $120.4 million. This deal includes $85.653 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, averaging $30.1 million per year. He now outshines Houston Texans’ Derek Stingley Jr., who signed a three-year, $90 million extension earlier this year.
Gardner took to social media, saying, “this only the beginning,” and expressed gratitude towards his brother, his agents, and the Jets fans. His words reflect not just a personal milestone but also a collective journey with the team.
THE DEAL IS DONE📝 this only the beginning. my brother @allantegardner bts & @ajv got it done. I appreciate the Jets organization for believing in me, my teammates for the blood, sweat, & tears we put in, and JETS NATION… I appreciate y’all supporting me💚 Thank you GOD🥀 pic.twitter.com/1qsiT3Xga3
Gardner still had two years left on his rookie contract, including a guaranteed fifth-year option for 2026. The Jets’ strategy now focuses on securing key players for the long haul. This is a shift from past practices, where the team often lost star talents.
At just 24 years old, Gardner is leading by example. He previously earned the title of NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022 and made history as the only cornerback to achieve first-team All-Pro status in his first two seasons since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. This accomplishment puts him alongside legends like Lawrence Taylor.
In his rookie season, Gardner ranked second among cornerbacks in Expected Points Added per target, but his performance dipped in subsequent years. In 2023, he fell to 13th, and then 47th in 2024, raising questions about consistency. Still, his skill set and potential make him an essential part of the Jets’ future.
The new leadership, including coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey, aims to retain top young talent, a goal often missed by previous executives. Gardner is determined to contribute to the team’s success. He stated, “I want to change the organization,” showcasing his commitment to the franchise’s future.
With these contract extensions, both Gardner and Wilson are setting a new tone for the Jets’ management strategy. As the team hopes to build on recent successes, fans are eager to see how this young core develops for years to come.
