For the second consecutive year, Nebraska football is on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator. Coach Matt Rhule and John Butler have parted ways after just one season together.
Rhule announced, “I informed John Butler earlier today that he will not be retained as defensive coordinator, effective immediately. We thank John for his contributions over the past two seasons and wish him the best moving forward in his coaching career.” In the meantime, Phil Snow will step in as the interim defensive coordinator for the upcoming bowl game.
Nebraska’s defense, known as the Blackshirts, had a mixed performance in 2025. They were praised for their pass defense, allowing only 141.1 yards per game—ranking second nationally, just behind Ohio State. However, their rush defense struggled significantly, finishing No. 95 in the nation, giving up 171.2 yards per game. Five opponents rushed for over 200 yards against Nebraska, which raised concerns about their overall defensive strategy.
Interestingly, in a stark comparison, last year’s squad allowed only 101.2 rushing yards per game. This difference highlights a dramatic decline in their defensive consistency and effectiveness.
