The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has requested a ban on the movie ‘Emergency’, directed by Kangana Ranaut. They believe the film misrepresents Sikh history and could harm the community’s image. Scheduled for release in Punjab on January 17, 2025, the SGPC has expressed serious concerns over the film’s content.
SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami wrote to Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, stating that the film may provoke outrage among Sikhs. He emphasized that it’s the government’s duty to prevent its release to avoid potential unrest. In his letter, Dhami mentioned previous protests against the film and noted that the Punjab government has not yet responded.
Dhami also indicated that the SGPC plans to reach out to local deputy commissioners across Punjab to reinforce their stance against the film. They view the portrayal of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the movie as a serious misrepresentation, contributing to their call for a ban.
Overall, the SGPC stands firm in their opposition to ‘Emergency’, warning that the Sikh community could express strong discontent if the film is released in its current form.
