FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Department of Health reported a case of measles in an adult from Franklin County. This is the first confirmed case in the state since February 2023.
The person traveled recently to an area where measles spreads. After returning, they visited Planet Fitness in Frankfort while contagious.
Health officials are reaching out to anyone who might have been exposed, especially those at Planet Fitness on February 17 between 9 a.m. and noon.
Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious health issues, particularly in children. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, which can appear 8-12 days after exposure. A rash typically starts about three to five days later, usually beginning on the face.
Dr. Steven Stack, KDPH Commissioner, emphasized the risk: “Measles is one of the most contagious viruses in the world. Fortunately, there’s a way to prevent it. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and effective.” Vaccination is crucial for protecting both children and adults.
Meanwhile, Texas and New Mexico are facing their own measles outbreaks. Texas has reported over 100 cases, the largest outbreak in nearly 30 years, leading to multiple hospitalizations. Tragically, one unvaccinated child’s death related to the outbreak has been confirmed, marking the first measles-related death in the U.S. since 2015.
