Kyle Whittingham, the beloved head coach of Utah Football, is stepping down after an outstanding journey. His last game will be the Las Vegas Bowl on December 31. Whittingham has been a part of Utah’s football scene since 1994, leading the team as head coach since 2004. Over his career, he has amassed 177 wins, making him the most successful active coach in the Big 12.
Whittingham expressed gratitude for his time at Utah. “It’s been an honor to lead the program for over two decades,” he said, acknowledging the bond formed with players and coaches. His leadership has meant a lot to both the team and the community.
During his tenure, Whittingham turned Utah into a powerhouse in college football. Under his guidance, the Utes went to two Rose Bowls, claimed three conference championships, and recorded an undefeated season that culminated in a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama in 2008. He’s known for his strategic mind and ability to develop talent, leading to memorable victories and the program’s highest achievements.
Director of Athletics Mark Harlan praised Whittingham, stating, “His impact goes far beyond the wins. He set the bar high in terms of character and integrity.” Whittingham’s legacy includes coaching 35 players who earned All-America honors, as well as leading teams to winning records in 18 of his 21 years as head coach.
Under Whittingham, Utah had notable postseason success, including 11 bowl wins, ranking him fourth among active coaches. His record includes wins over prestigious teams like Pittsburgh in 2005 and Alabama in 2009.
Moreover, he was instrumental in preparing players for the NFL. From 2017 to 2025, Utah saw 31 players drafted, the most among current Big 12 schools. This commitment to player development highlights his influence not only on the field but also in shaping career paths.
Academically, the program also flourished under him, with numerous students receiving recognition for their achievements.
