Breaking News: Lithuania Closes Border with Belarus Amid Airspace Violations by Balloons

Lithuania has recently shut its border with Belarus due to ongoing airspace violations. The foreign ministry announced this decision on Monday, as tensions rise in Europe over airspace security.

Inga Ruginienė, Lithuania’s prime minister, pointed out that “dozens of helium balloons” have crossed into Lithuania from Belarus in the past few days. She stated that these actions are a test of the European Union and NATO’s resolve against hybrid threats.

Speaking at a press conference, Ruginienė emphasized that Lithuania’s military is prepared to take necessary measures, including shooting down the balloons if they intrude. “We are ready to act decisively when our airspace is threatened,” she added.

Belarus responded by protesting the border closure, claiming it infringes on citizens’ rights and freedom of movement. They maintain that they support dialogue and cooperation despite the tensions.

Earlier this month, the small balloons that entered Lithuania carried smuggled goods, including cigarettes. Darius Buta from Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre noted that smugglers are increasingly using this method to bypass controls.

This incident has drawn attention from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who labeled the balloon incursions as a “hybrid threat.” She promised full support for Lithuania against these violations.

In a broader context, NATO is on high alert following several incursions by drones and aircraft in recent months. The alliance launched the “Eastern Sentry” mission to strengthen its presence in Eastern Europe, particularly in response to Russian actions.

In recent incidents, Poland shot down Russian drones that violated its airspace in September, marking a significant moment for NATO since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in early 2022. This situation reflects growing concerns over air defense in Europe and the need for resilience against hybrid warfare tactics.

As the situation evolves, experts emphasize the importance of international unity in addressing these challenges. They encourage open dialogue to prevent further escalation and maintain safety across borders.
