Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris was injured in a Fourth of July fireworks explosion, as reported by Bay Area News Group. His agent stated he is expected to return for the 2025 NFL season.

The incident took place early on July 5 in Antioch, California. Police reported that injuries were treated at the scene, while some required hospital care. Harris was first taken to John Muir Hospital and later transferred to Stanford Hospital for further treatment.

Doug Hendrickson, Harris’ agent, confirmed that the former Alabama star was at the event when the explosion occurred. He sustained a “superficial eye injury” and remains optimistic about his recovery.

“Najee was present at a 4th of July event where fireworks mishaps caused several injuries,” Hendrickson said. “He suffered a superficial eye injury but is expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season.”

Authorities are investigating the incident. Though they haven’t confirmed Harris’ involvement, Antioch Police shared details on their Facebook page.

The explosion injured six men and a 13-year-old boy. Reportedly, the individual who ignited the firework is in critical condition, having lost multiple fingers and sustaining facial and chest injuries, according to San Francisco Chronicle.

This offseason, Harris signed a one-year, $9.25 million deal with the Chargers, after playing his first few seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers drafted him 24th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, where he quickly made a name for himself.

During his time in Pittsburgh, Harris rushed for over 1,000 yards each season, peaking at 1,200 yards in his rookie year, earning a Pro Bowl nod. Over his career with the Steelers, he accumulated 4,312 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns, along with 1,149 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

With the Steelers not picking up his fifth-year option, he entered free agency, ultimately joining the Chargers. This year, he is expected to play a crucial role in their backfield, especially with other key players like J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards leaving. The Chargers also bolstered their running game by drafting Omarion Hampton from North Carolina in the first round.
