Lubbock, TX, is facing a case of measles. An unvaccinated child caught the virus while at a medical facility. Health officials are updating people who were in close contact with this child. Because measles spreads easily, more cases could appear, especially among those who aren’t vaccinated.

People who have received the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine usually don’t get measles. The highest risk of infection is among those who are unvaccinated or haven’t had measles before. Lubbock Public Health advises anyone over a year old who hasn’t been vaccinated to consider getting the MMR vaccine as a preventive measure.
Measles can be serious, especially for children. Early signs include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red eyes
- Red rash
The virus spreads through droplets when someone coughs or sneezes and can stay in the air for up to two hours. If you think you’ve been exposed to measles or have symptoms, it’s best to stay home and contact a healthcare provider for advice.
Signs of measles typically show up 7 to 21 days after exposure and may include:
- A high fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- White spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots) may appear 2-3 days after symptoms start.
- A flat, red rash may develop 3-5 days after symptoms begin, starting at the hairline and spreading downwards.
If you think you were exposed to measles or feel unwell, here’s what to do:
- Stay away from others to prevent spreading the virus.
- Call your healthcare provider to discuss testing.
- Monitor for any symptoms in the following weeks.
- If you have any questions, reach out to Lubbock Public Health at 806-775-2933.
If you need medical care, remember:
- Follow any posted signs at healthcare facilities.
- Wear a mask when entering.
- Let the front desk know about your concerns regarding measles.
- Limit the number of people accompanying you into the facility.
When to seek emergency help:
- If you have a very high fever (over 103°F)
- If you have severe coughing or trouble breathing
- If you notice serious issues like confusion or extreme fatigue
- If you experience signs of dehydration
