After parting ways with the Packers in 2018, Mike McCarthy spent a year away before joining the Cowboys. Now, he plans to take another break from coaching.

McCarthy has announced that he will not coach in 2025 and instead is focusing on the 2026 hiring cycle. Unlike last time, he will not receive a buyout, as his contract expired on January 14, leaving him without pay this year.

This gives him time to evaluate job openings and wait for teams to make coaching changes. When January rolls around, he’ll be among the candidates once again.

During this last hiring period, only the Saints and Bears interviewed him. Teams like the Jaguars, Jets, Raiders, and Patriots showed no interest. The Patriots named Mike Vrabel as their head coach prior to McCarthy becoming available for interviews.

It’s possible that the Saints informed McCarthy they are exploring other options, which has led to speculation that they might be interested in Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who is not available until after the Super Bowl.

At 61, McCarthy boasts a career record of 174 wins, 112 losses, and 2 ties in regular-season play. He has also led teams to an 11-11 postseason record, including a Super Bowl victory with the Packers in Super Bowl XLV.
