Nicholls State University Women’s Basketball Coach Steps Down
Justin Payne, the head coach of the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team, has stepped down after three years. The announcement was made by Jonathan Terrell, the Vice President for Athletics.
In his absence, assistant coach Jalyn Johnson-Joubert will take over as interim head coach.
Terrell expressed mixed feelings about Payne’s departure, saying, “It’s tough to lose great people. But when they leave things better than they found them, you wish them all the best.” He praised Payne’s dedication and impact on the team and the community, noting that he will be missed.
Payne finishes his time at Nicholls with a record of 46 wins and 48 losses. During his tenure, the team reached the Southland Conference Tournament every year, winning at least one game in each tournament. In the 2024-25 season, he led the Colonels to a 17-14 record, marking their first winning season since 2018-19.
Under his leadership, several players flourished. Lexi Alexander earned All SLC Second Team honors, Britiya Curtis was named SLC Freshman of the Year, and Tanita Swift received All SLC Defensive accolades.
Comparing his time at Nicholls to past seasons, the team’s recent successes highlight a positive trend. The rise in players’ achievements also shows how a strong coach can develop talent and foster a competitive spirit.
As fans and players reflect on Payne’s impact, social media reactions reveal a mix of gratitude and anticipation. Many are curious about Johnson-Joubert’s approach moving forward.
