Pennsylvania’s Governor, Josh Shapiro, and his family faced a frightening situation early Sunday. They were evacuated from their home in Harrisburg due to an arson attack that caused significant damage. According to Shapiro, the Pennsylvania State Police woke them up around 2 a.m. by banging on the door to alert them of the danger. Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident.
While the State Police and the Capitol Police helped evacuate the family, firefighters worked quickly to put out the blaze. Shapiro expressed his gratitude for the first responders. He stated, “Every day, we stand with the law enforcement and first responders who run towards danger to protect our communities. Last night, they did so for our family.”
The State Police confirmed that the fire caused substantial damage to part of the residence but did not disclose the identity of any suspects. The investigation is still ongoing. The governor’s residence itself, a grand 29,000-square-foot Georgian-style home on the banks of the Susquehanna River, was completed in 1968. Over the years, it has served as a home to eight governors and their families.
The historic site is open to the public for tours, showcasing art and artifacts. In a recent effort to improve accessibility and environmental sustainability, renovations were completed in 2022, creating a more welcoming space for all visitors.
