NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, originally from the Pittsburgh area, recently shared some unexpected news about his return from the International Space Station (ISS). He needed medical attention, prompting SpaceX Crew-11’s early return in January.
In a statement on NASA’s website, Fincke described experiencing a “medical event that required immediate attention” on January 7. Thankfully, his crewmates acted quickly, and their swift response, along with advice from NASA flight surgeons, helped stabilize his condition.
NASA evaluated the situation and decided it was safest for the crew to return early. Fincke emphasized that this wasn’t an emergency but a well-planned effort to use advanced medical imaging that isn’t available on the ISS.
The Crew-11 team splashed down off the coast of San Diego on January 15, concluding their five-and-a-half-month mission, which Fincke described as remarkable.
Fincke, who was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1996, expressed gratitude to his fellow Expedition 74 members, as well as to the entire NASA team and SpaceX. He also appreciated the medical staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, near San Diego.
“I’m doing very well and continuing standard post-flight reconditioning at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston,” he said. “Spaceflight is an incredible privilege, reminding us of our humanity.”
