Pope Francis has faced two episodes of acute respiratory issues due to mucus buildup, according to the Holy See Press Office. On Monday evening, they shared an update on his health.

The statement reported, “Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus, leading to bronchospasm.” To address this, doctors performed two bronchoscopies to clear the mucus.

They resumed non-invasive mechanical ventilation in the afternoon. Thankfully, the Pope was alert, aware, and cooperative throughout the procedures. However, his prognosis is still cautious.

Recent blood tests show no changes and indicate there is no new infection, which is a positive sign. This suggests that the mucus buildup is a result of his ongoing pneumonia, rather than a new health issue.

The bronchi reacted to try and expel the mucus, which explains his recent respiratory distress. His overall condition remains complex, and there’s a possibility of further respiratory crises.
