Pope Francis faced a sudden breathing issue and needed a ventilator on Friday, according to the latest news from the Vatican.

He experienced vomiting, which caused some complications. Medical staff addressed this problem before placing him on mechanical ventilation. Although he is not intubated, he is using a mask to help him breathe.

Thankfully, the pope has remained alert and aware throughout this ordeal. However, officials mentioned he’s not out of danger yet. Doctors expect to have more information about his health within the next couple of days.

Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital two weeks ago due to various lung issues, including bronchitis and pneumonia. This is his fourth stay in the hospital, making it the longest since his papacy began in 2013.

The pope has dealt with lung problems for much of his life. In his youth, he suffered from severe pneumonia and even had a part of one lung removed.

The Vatican is providing updates twice a day about his health. Just yesterday, they mentioned that while his condition was showing some improvement, the overall prognosis was still unclear.

To focus on his health, the pope’s schedule has been adjusted. Notably, he will not conduct the Ash Wednesday service next week, which marks the beginning of Lent. A cardinal will step in to lead that service.

Friday night, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández prayed for the pope, emphasizing that prayers should not only be for him but also for those suffering from war, illness, and poverty in this challenging time.
