Bishop Resigns Amid Embezzlement Charges
In El Cajon, California, Bishop Emanuel Shaleta of the Chaldean Catholic community has resigned after being accused of stealing $270,000 from his parish. Pope Leo XIV announced the resignation, which had actually taken place in February but was not made public until now.
During a recent court session, Shaleta pleaded not guilty to 16 felony charges, including money laundering. He was arrested while attempting to leave the country, prompting concerns about him being a flight risk. Prosecutor Joel Madero revealed that Shaleta is linked to missing funds from church rental payments, with discrepancies observed in the church accounts.
Supporters attend the court hearings, expressing their faith in Shaleta. The bishop has maintained that he has never misused church money, stating he’s done his best to manage donations properly. Nevertheless, if convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
This incident comes at a critical time for the Chaldean Catholic Church. Cardinal Louis Sako, a respected figure in the community, recently retired, offering opportunities for new leadership. The Chaldean Catholic Church has around one million members globally, with significant populations in the U.S., particularly in Detroit, California, and Arizona.
Rev. Mark Morozowich from the Catholic University of America believes the changes in leadership could bring new energy and perspectives to the community. “A bishop facing serious accusations casts a shadow on a community that has already faced many challenges,” he noted.
Historically, the Chaldean community has experienced hardship, especially in Iraq. This adds a layer of emotional weight to the current situation. As church doors remain closed and the congregation waits for clarity, the future of the parish and its leadership hangs in the balance.
