Michael Schill announced his decision to step down as president of Northwestern University after a three-year term marked by growth and achievements across its campuses. In a message to the Northwestern community, Schill expressed gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “It has been my profound honor to serve as president.” He highlighted the progress made during his presidency, despite facing significant challenges, including a freeze on federal research funding.
He emphasized the need for new leadership to guide Northwestern into its next chapter. Schill will remain in his role until an interim president is appointed and plans to assist in the transition. After stepping down, he will take a sabbatical and return to teaching and research at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law.
Peter Barris, chair of the Board of Trustees, praised Schill’s leadership during tumultuous times in higher education. He acknowledged the impactful decisions made under Schill’s guidance, which helped elevate Northwestern’s status among leading universities.
Entering office in September 2022, Schill led Northwestern to its highest-ever national ranking, reaching No. 6 in U.S. News & World Report. During his tenure, the university raised nearly $2.5 billion, with record-breaking fundraising years in 2024 and 2025. Notable achievements include:
- Securing funding for essential research during the federal freeze.
- Launching significant academic initiatives and research centers, such as the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Chicago and the NSF-Simons AI Institute for the Sky.
- Fostering open dialogue through the Litowitz Center for Enlightened Disagreement.
- Overseeing major construction projects like the restoration of Deering Library and the upcoming Kellogg School of Management building.
Experts have noted that leadership in higher education is pivotal, especially amid rising challenges. “Schill’s commitment to scientific initiatives has set the stage for future advancements in fields like data science and artificial intelligence,” said Vicky Kalogera, a physics professor who works closely with Schill.
Schill also navigated complex issues, including a hazing scandal and campus unrest following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. In response to these challenges, the University implemented policies to protect student-athletes and reduce antisemitism on campus.
Reflecting on his time at Northwestern, Schill said, “I’m grateful to have worked alongside such talented colleagues and to have witnessed the strength of the Northwestern community.” He expressed confidence in the students, believing they will impact the world positively.
