The Las Vegas Raiders are looking to promote Rob Leonard to defensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Leonard, currently the run game coordinator and defensive line coach, has worked directly with standout defensive end Maxx Crosby. Crosby’s future with the team is unclear, especially after the recent hiring of new head coach Klint Kubiak.
Leonard has been with the Raiders since 2023, and his experience includes coaching at various levels. Before joining the Raiders, he was the outside linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens and held positions with the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants.
Last season, the Raiders’ defense struggled under former coordinator Patrick Graham and coach Pete Carroll, a mix of styles that didn’t work out. They ranked 25th in points allowed, giving up an average of 25.4 points per game. Despite this, their run defense was impressive, allowing just 3.9 yards per carry, one of the best in the league. Crosby had 10 sacks, while rookie Tonka Hemingway showcased potential with four sacks in the final five games.
The Raiders are also keeping Joe Woods as the defensive pass game coordinator. This decision could provide stability to a unit that badly needs it.
Historically, the Raiders have always had a mixed bag on defense. This franchise is known for its tough, grit-filled style that made a mark in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, fans are looking for that same intensity.
As the team continues to evolve, experts believe Leonard’s promotion could bring the fresh perspective needed. “Consistency in coaching is key for any defensive unit. Leonard’s familiarity with the players will help,” says sports analyst Jenna Richards.
With the NFL season approaching, these changes will be critical for the Raiders. How will Kubiak’s leadership and Leonard’s experience shape the team? Fans are eager to find out.
