The Navy reported that this special operation aimed to curb illegal fishing by foreign vessels and protect the livelihood of local fishermen. The boats and fishermen were brought to Talaimannar Pier, where they will face legal action from the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar. So far this year, the Navy has arrested 131 Indian fishermen and confiscated 18 boats for similar offenses.

The issue of fishermen crossing borders has strained relations between India and Sri Lanka. There have been numerous incidents, including the Sri Lankan Navy firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait. In 2024 alone, 529 Indian fishermen were arrested for reportedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters. This ongoing conflict highlights the need for dialogue and cooperation between the two nations to manage fishing rights and protect the interests of local communities.
