NORFOLK, Va. — Two people were rushed to the hospital after a shooting near Old Dominion University on Wednesday night. The Norfolk Police Department reported that their injuries are life-threatening.

The shooting happened around 9:50 p.m. in parking lot 3, located on 49th Street. The university confirmed that neither of the victims were students or associated with the school.
Shortly after the incident, at 10:01 p.m., campus officials sent an emergency alert via email and text, advising everyone to stay indoors. This alert was lifted at 11:43 p.m.
“The safety of the ODU community is our top priority,” said ODU Police Chief Garrett Shelton. He noted that students automatically receive ODU Alerts, while faculty and staff can choose to opt-in. He encouraged all community members to sign up for the university’s official alerts.
For those affected by this violence, counseling services will be available on Thursday. Students can call the Office of Counseling at 757-683-4401, or they can schedule an appointment online.
As of now, police have not identified any suspects and confirmed that no students were involved in the shooting. The Norfolk Police Department is leading the investigation.
