Two suspects are in custody after a shooting at a condo complex in Sicamous on Sunday evening.

According to RCMP Sgt. Murray McNeil, officers responded around 4 p.m. to a report of gunfire in the 300 block of Mara Lane. Witnesses told police they saw suspects leaving the scene in a white SUV.
“The intended target was a local man with a police record,” McNeil said. The man managed to leave the area in a different vehicle. Police later found him unharmed, but his truck was seized due to multiple bullet holes.
Law enforcement quickly provided a description of the white SUV to nearby detachments. Salmon Arm RCMP attempted to stop a westbound SUV matching that description, but the vehicle did not pull over. It was later found abandoned near Highway 1 in Canoe. Officers and canine units searched the area for the suspects.
Thanks to a successful tracking effort by dog units, police arrested both individuals in a residential area of Canoe. These suspects are already known to authorities in Alberta.
Sgt. McNeil noted that while a shooting in a residential neighborhood is concerning, it was targeted and thus isolated.
As investigations continue, this incident raises questions about public safety and crime trends. In Canada, gun violence has gained attention, with a 2021 report from Statistics Canada showing a 27% increase in firearm-related homicides since 2016. This statistic reflects broader issues regarding gun control and community safety.
In this case, community responses have varied, with some residents expressing relief that police acted swiftly. Social media discussions have emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures in neighborhoods where incidents of gun violence occur.
