HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) might be searching for a new football coach again. Recent reports suggest that the University of Memphis is close to hiring USM’s head coach, Charles Huff.
As noted by ESPN, Memphis aims to finalize a deal that could land Huff a five-year contract. The Tigers’ coaching position opened up after Ryan Silverfield took a role at the University of Arkansas.
Huff, who previously coached at Marshall University, joined USM with a four-year contract worth $950,000 per season, beginning in December 2024. Under his leadership, the Golden Eagles struggled initially, with only four wins in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. However, in 2025, they turned things around, finishing with a commendable 7-5 record and securing a bowl game spot.
If Huff decides to leave for Memphis, his contract includes a buyout clause. If he terminates his contract before December 8, 2025, USM would require a payment of $1 million. If he leaves before December 8, 2026, the fee decreases to $750,000.
