A woman was arrested this week in connection with a stunning jewel heist at the Louvre. She and four others are under investigation for theft and conspiracy. This 38-year-old, who cried during the hearing, lives in La Courneuve, a suburb of Paris. The judge will decide her fate in the coming days, and the hearing was held behind closed doors.
In a brazen daylight robbery last month, thieves used power tools to get into the Louvre, managing to steal jewelry worth around $102 million in just seven minutes. Initial reports stated two suspects were arrested, but authorities have since taken five more into custody, including the prime suspect, mainly from areas around Paris.
One of the recently arrested individuals has since been released. His lawyers commented that many arrests in such cases feel random and lack clarity.
The first two men detained were also charged after admitting some involvement. One suspect is a 34-year-old Algerian with DNA evidence linking him to a scooter used during the escape. The other is a 39-year-old taxi driver known to police. They are believed to have breached the gallery while accomplices waited outside. Meanwhile, the stolen jewelry remains missing.
Among the lost items was a diamond- and emerald-studded crown that belonged to Empress Eugenie, as well as a necklace gifted by Napoleon I to his second wife, Empress Marie-Louise. Experts warn that selling these high-profile jewels will be tough. Master jeweler Stephen Portier remarked, “The entire world knows about this heist. Jewelers will recognize these pieces immediately and will contact law enforcement if they are offered.”
Even despite this, there’s speculation that if the thieves manage to break up the jewels and sell them off piecemeal, they could still reap significant profits. The emergence of such bold crimes raises questions about security in iconic locations.
