A police officer died while responding to a shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, early Saturday morning, according to a post from the police department.
The shooter was also killed, as confirmed in a statement from the hospital. Fortunately, no patients were injured during the incident. A spokesperson for UPMC Memorial assured that the hospital is now secure.
Ted Czech, a spokesperson for York County’s Office of Emergency Management, stated the situation has been brought under control and an investigation is currently in progress. Law enforcement officers are onsite, directing families of patients to a nearby parking lot for safety.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was briefed on the shooting and is en route to the hospital. In his statement, he emphasized that the hospital is secure and local, state, and federal authorities are working together in response to the situation.
Local officials, including state Senator Dawn Keefer and state Representative Seth Grove, expressed their condolences. UPMC Memorial, a 104-bed facility, opened in August 2019 and offers various services, including emergency care and surgeries, serving the community of York, located in southern Pennsylvania.
