In July, a team using the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Chile found something intriguing: an object flying through our solar system at a speed too fast for the Sun to capture it. This object, now called 3I/ATLAS, is only the third interstellar object we’ve spotted.
The astronomy world is buzzing with excitement. Most believe it’s a natural comet, with a nucleus made of ice and a bright cloud of gas around it, known as a coma. However, Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb continues to raise eyebrows, suggesting there might be a chance it’s an alien artifact.
As researchers study 3I/ATLAS, they remain curious about its nature. When it made its nearest approach to Earth on December 19, an international team pointed the Green Bank Telescope— the largest single-dish radio telescope— at it.
Their results were disappointing but expected: they found no signs of artificial signals from 3I/ATLAS. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) noted that the object behaved just like a natural comet. Their findings suggest it mostly shows typical characteristics of a comet, supporting the view that it’s not an extraterrestrial probe but rather a natural phenomenon.
Despite this, Loeb is still documenting “anomalies” related to 3I/ATLAS, including its large size and its unusual trajectory. This trajectory brings it close to Mars and will eventually take it near Venus and Jupiter.
Interestingly, if it were an alien probe, wouldn’t it make sense for it to try to communicate with us? Earth is awash in radio signals, making us hard to miss in the cosmic landscape.
Loeb created a “Loeb scale” to assess the likelihood of interstellar objects being alien in nature, ranging from zero (natural icy rock) to ten (confirmed alien technology). Initially, he rated 3I/ATLAS a four, but has since held off updating this until more data becomes available.
In the grand scheme of things, 3I/ATLAS serves as a reminder of how little we know about our universe. As more interstellar bodies are discovered, they can offer insights into the nature of celestial phenomena.
While the fervor about the possibility of alien life continues, we may need to keep our excitement in check. The recent studies indicate this mysterious visitor is more like a cosmic snowball than a visitor from another planet.
