Brenau University Expands: New Featherbone Communiversity Building Acquisition in Gainesville

Brenau University has taken an exciting step by purchasing the Featherbone Communiversity located at 1001 Chestnut St. SE in Gainesville. This site has been a part of Brenau’s journey since 2007 when it became home to the nursing program.

Brenau President David L. Barnett expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition. “Transitioning from tenant to owner of the former Featherbone property is a great chance for us,” he said. “This spot is ideal for growing Brenau’s programs and connecting with the students and community.” Barnett has a long history with the site, having worked with the original creator, Gus Whalen, nearly 20 years ago.

The purchase was partly supported by a generous donation from Featherbone Center, LLC. Partner Philip Wilheit shared his excitement about the collaboration. “It has always been Gus Whalen’s vision for the university to own this property, expanding educational opportunities. We’re glad to support Brenau’s mission,” he said.

Currently, Featherbone Communiversity is home to the Mary Inez Grindle School of Nursing and the School of Occupational Therapy. These programs benefit from advanced facilities, including four simulation labs for nursing students, featuring a pregnancy and child simulator. Occupational therapy students also have specialized labs and spaces to engage with community members.

As Brenau evaluates future possibilities for the property, the existing programs will continue to thrive at this vital educational hub.

This move reflects a broader trend in higher education, where institutions are increasingly focused on expanding their facilities to better serve local communities. With more educational programs being offered in various formats, like online and hybrid learning, universities are finding innovative ways to enhance their impact.
