Christian Yelich is back! The former MVP has been activated from the injured list, ready to make an impact for the Milwaukee Brewers. To make room for him, Tyler Black has been sent back to Triple-A Nashville.
Yelich missed a month due to a left groin strain he picked up in April. Before his injury, he had a strong start, boasting a .314 batting average, a .375 on-base percentage, and a .451 slugging percentage in just 56 plate appearances. While he may not be in his prime, Yelich is still a solid contributor. Last season, he hit 29 home runs and posted a .264/.343/.452 line.
Tonight, he reclaimed his usual spot at number three in the batting order against San Diego’s Matt Waldron. The Brewers managed well without him, ranking eighth in the majors for runs scored during his absence. Tyler Black and Gary Sánchez shared the designated hitter role, both performing decently. However, Black’s limited defensive skills made it difficult for him to find regular playing time with both Yelich and Andrew Vaughn returning from injuries.
Milwaukee’s left side of the infield has struggled, but Yelich’s return adds depth. Black’s position is unclear now; since he hasn’t played third base since 2024, his focus has shifted to first base and corner outfield. And with Yelich, Vaughn, Jake Bauers, and catchers William Contreras and Sánchez all in the mix, first base and DH opportunities are scarce. This is Black’s last minor league option year, and as a result, he could be a trade candidate this summer to help strengthen the Brewers’ bullpen.
In other news, manager Pat Murphy shared some injury updates. Quinn Priester, who has been sidelined this season due to a nerve issue, is set to resume his rehab assignment soon. He struggled during his first attempt in late April but has improved after a recent bullpen session. The Brewers are hopeful he will return by early June.
Outfielder Brandon Lockridge is also on the mend, recovering from a nasty knee injury he sustained after crashing into the wall. Luckily, he avoided fractures and aims to return a few weeks after Priester.
As the season progresses, every player’s contribution will be crucial for the Brewers. The team’s adaptability will be key as they re-integrate Yelich and look forward to welcoming back other injured players.
Statistics show that teams with depth often perform better in the long run, and with Yelich back, Milwaukee is looking to capitalize on a strong season ahead.
