Brewers Pitcher Aaron Civale Seeks Trade After Bullpen Transition: What’s Next?

Veteran pitcher Aaron Civale wants a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers after losing his spot in the rotation to rising star Jacob Misiorowski. Civale’s agent, Jack Toffey, spoke with Brewers GM Matt Arnold, highlighting that Civale wants to continue as a starting pitcher. He’s set to become a free agent at the end of this season.

Civale, who turned 30 recently, has always been a starter in his 122 appearances. He even performed well in relief during a playoff game last year, pitching three scoreless innings against the New York Mets. The Brewers traded for him from the Tampa Bay Rays last July, where he had a strong showing with a 3.53 ERA and a 6-3 record over 14 starts.

With Misiorowski’s arrival, the Brewers now have a crowded rotation, including Freddy Peralta, Chad Patrick, Quinn Priester, and José Quintana, along with other options at Triple-A. Misiorowski is making his major league debut against the St. Louis Cardinals, further complicating Civale’s situation.

Recently, the Brewers sent down Logan Henderson, who had an impressive 1.71 ERA in his first four starts. Other pitchers like Tobias Myers and Nestor Cortes Jr. are also in the mix. Toffey mentioned that several teams are looking for starting pitchers, indicating there’s interest in exploring trades for Civale and others.

Civale’s salary of $8 million puts him among the highest-paid pitchers on the team. The Brewers often seek cost-effective options, especially since their payroll ranks 24th in the league. Misiorowski, meanwhile, is the No. 87 prospect in baseball according to Keith Law.

The organization’s decision to move Civale to the bullpen seems to be more about strategy than performance. Toffey emphasized that Civale isn’t upset but is puzzled by the choice. He still has much to offer, with options for potential trades on the horizon in a tight pitching market.
