Utah State University President Brad L. Mortensen has appointed Brian Steed as the new vice president for government and external relations, starting June 1. Steed will also lead the Janet Quinney Lawson Institute for Land, Water, and Air, while Anna McEntire takes over as the institute’s director.
Mortensen praised Steed for his strong leadership and connections throughout the state. “Brian knows how to unite people to tackle tough issues,” he said. “I’m thrilled for the future of Utah State and Utah under his guidance.”
Steed brings a wealth of experience to this role. He has worked for Utah State in various capacities, including as the first executive director of the Lawson Institute since July 2022. Recently, he was named the commissioner for the Great Salt Lake by Governor Spencer Cox and served as a co-chair of the Great Salt Lake Strike Team. This group brought together experts from several universities and state departments to focus on research and solutions for the shrinking lake.
Expressing his excitement about the new role, Steed said, “Being part of Utah State University is an honor. Our research and education shape the leaders of tomorrow and guide important decisions.” He aims to strengthen partnerships across Utah and beyond.
Steed’s background is impressive. He has been a special advisor for university leaders, taught in applied economics, and led significant research projects. He previously held key positions, including executive director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources and chief of staff for Congressman Chris Stewart in D.C.
His education is solid too: he earned a B.A. and M.A. in political science from Utah State, a Ph.D. in public policy from Indiana University, and a J.D. from the University of Utah.
This shift comes at a time when effective governance and collaboration are critical. According to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, partnerships between universities and public sectors can enhance community development significantly. As Steed steps into this role, his focus on collaboration could reinforce these benefits for Utah.
