Bridging Hearts: How Mercy Health Connects Patients and Doctors for Enhanced Care

CINCINNATI – Mercy Health hosted its first Heart Recovery Reunion in Cincinnati on Friday.

This event allowed patients to reconnect with the medical teams that helped save their lives.

“It’s truly remarkable,” said Dr. Adam Raskin, an interventional cardiologist and co-medical director at Mercy Heart and Vascular Institute.

During the reunion, nine cardiac surgery patients and their families met with the healthcare professionals who supported them through their recovery.

“This event brings together patients who have bounced back from serious heart issues,” Dr. Raskin explained. “They’ve faced major challenges but are here to share their journey.”

Patients had the chance to express their gratitude to their doctors, nurses, and therapists. One patient shared, “The staff at Mercy Hospital treated me with such care. God bless you all for helping me get back on track.”

Dr. Raskin remarked that during hospital stays, patients often form strong bonds with the staff. This reunion was emotional for everyone involved.

“Seeing patients at their lowest and then witnessing their joy with family and friends brings a smile to our faces,” he said. “It motivates us to continue our work every day.”

Many of these survivors were treated with an Impella, the smallest heart pump in the world. Dr. Raskin explained that these pumps are minimally invasive and can be placed through a leg or arm. They are temporary, usually used for a few days or weeks, allowing patients to recover enough to walk home.

This reunion came after the inaugural National Heart Recovery Awareness Day, which is observed on February 20.
