India, France, and Europe all play crucial roles in maintaining peace, especially amid rising tensions between China and the U.S. Luis Vassy, a senior French diplomat, emphasized this during a recent visit to India. He noted that while the U.S. might have different priorities, it’s essential for Europe to carve its own path and build its own partnerships.
Vassy highlighted the importance of educational exchanges between France and India. He discussed how Sciences Po, a prestigious university in France, aims to maintain an open and selective environment for foreign students, particularly those from India. Currently, Sciences Po has around 200 Indian students and 14 agreements with Indian universities. They recently partnered with the Tata Institute for Social Sciences to create a dual diploma program.
Vassy pointed out that the relationship between India and France is viewed positively in France. He described it as strategic and based on mutual respect, fostering a spirit of collaboration. He believes France can serve as a stable partner in the current geopolitical climate, with unique diplomatic strategies not just in South Asia but also in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions.
Although Sciences Po isn’t planning to launch a campus in India soon, Vassy expressed a desire to significantly increase student exchanges. He pointed out that many Indian students pursue studies in countries like Australia, the U.K., and the U.S., showing the potential for greater ties between Europe and India.
In addition, Vassy stressed the need for future leaders in both countries to connect. Sciences Po is known for training many professionals who occupy key roles in public and private sectors, making these exchanges vital for fostering collaboration and addressing global challenges. He believes that understanding between the young leaders of India and France can lead to meaningful partnerships in the future.
During his trip, Vassy and his team met with leaders from Indian universities, policymakers, and industry experts. These discussions aimed to address global issues and develop the next generation of leaders in social sciences.
As they move forward, the focus remains on building strong, collaborative relationships that benefit both nations and serve the broader international community.
