Brighton & Hove Ranks Among Top 10% of Councils Nationwide for Exceptional Climate Action – Discover How!

Just two weeks ago, Brighton & Hove made it onto the prestigious Carbon Disclosure Project’s A list. This recognition highlights the city’s strong leadership and effective plans to tackle climate change—one of only 48 cities in Europe to achieve this top score.

In a recent assessment by Climate Emergency UK, a total of 391 councils were evaluated on their climate action efforts. Brighton & Hove earned an average score of 54%, positioning it among only 62 councils in the UK to score over 50%. These scorecards look at climate initiatives planned for 2024, covering areas like buildings, transport, land use, and waste management.

The city excelled in energy efficiency, scoring an impressive 87% for its initiatives to install low-carbon heating solutions like solar panels and heat pumps. By the end of 2024, the council plans to publish priority areas for renewable energy such as solar, wind, and district heating, boosting its score in land use and planning.

Brighton & Hove also made strides in providing zero-carbon transport and promoting waste reduction. Their school streets program expanded, and a new food strategy was released, contributing to a 10% increase in their overall score from the previous year. This includes more recycling options for residents.

Councillor Tim Rowkins, the deputy leader and Cabinet member for Net Zero, expressed pride in the city’s achievements. He emphasized how the council aims to create a cleaner, fairer Brighton & Hove. Their focus on low-emission transport, improved energy efficiency in homes, and waste reduction reflects a comprehensive approach to sustainability. “The details in the scorecards will guide us as we continue to make a real impact,” he said.

Climate Emergency UK collaborates with local councils and communities to promote climate action and advocates for greater powers and funding at the national level. Their assessment methodology involved over 90 organizations, including Friends of the Earth and Ashden, ensuring a thorough evaluation of climate efforts across councils.
