Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, has been at the center of a legal battle due to toxic rumors and cyberbullying. Her daughter, Tiphaine Auzière, recently testified in court about the severe impact these attacks have had on her mother’s health and personal life.
Tiphaine, 41, spoke on the final day of a trial involving ten individuals accused of spreading false claims about Brigitte’s gender and sexuality. She highlighted the distress her mother faces daily due to conspiracy theories, particularly the unfounded rumors suggesting she is transgender.
“It’s crucial for me to share how this has affected my mother,” Tiphaine said. She noted a noticeable decline in Brigitte’s health since these allegations emerged. Brigitte feels pressure over her appearance, as she knows any misstep can fuel these damaging claims. Tiphaine pointed out that her mother’s struggles extend to her grandchildren, who face bullying at school due to this controversy.
The nature of social media can amplify such harassment easily. A May 2023 survey revealed that nearly 40% of people have faced online bullying, with women being affected disproportionately. This type of abuse doesn’t just harm victims; it can also ripple out, impacting their family and friends.
Among the accused are an elected official and a gallery owner. One defendant, Aurélien Poirson-Atlan, claimed he was merely expressing a different view as a supposed satirist. Meanwhile, past offenders like Natacha Rey had already been found guilty of slander for similar falsehoods, only to be later acquitted on appeal.
The Macron family has faced these allegations not just in France but internationally. Right-wing influencer Candace Owens has also spread similar claims, asserting that adequate proof of Brigitte’s identity would disprove these rumors. In an upcoming court case, the Macrons are expected to present both photographic and scientific evidence to show Brigitte is a biological woman. Their lawyer expressed the distress involved in having to provide such proof.
Brigitte Macron’s story reflects a disturbing trend of online harassment, one that pits public figures against relentless social media scrutiny. It raises essential questions about freedom of expression and the responsibilities that come with it. When does expressing an opinion cross the line into harmful territory?
