Cameron Brink, a forward for the LA Sparks, recently voiced concerns about the online reactions to the team’s call for male practice players. The Sparks sought male athletes to join their practice squad, and the response was so large that they ended applications early.
Brink opened up about her feelings during an episode of her "Straight to Cam" podcast. While she has nothing against practicing with men, she was taken aback by some of the comments made in response to their announcement. The social media post featured Brink and her teammates—Dearica Hamby, Rickea Jackson, and Kelsey Plum—and aimed to invite talented male players for tryouts.
"I’m really icked out by the potential new practice players," Brink admitted. She shared that typically, they recruit male players from nearby universities, specifically USC, who already have experience playing alongside the women’s team.
Brink highlighted some of the uncomfortable comments she saw, stating, “Who are we trusting coming into this gym?” These reactions reflect a broader issue in sports, where female athletes often face objectifying remarks, especially in mixed-gender settings.
Adding to the dynamics, Brink, who stands at 6-foot-4, humorously remarked about her reluctance to engage in traditional rebounding practices with the new players. "I’m not boxing out anyone," she said, referencing her new coach’s likely reactions to her rebellious approach.
Historically, the conversation around gender in sports participation has evolved. In the past, women often practiced primarily with other women, but as boundaries shift, the integration of male practice players has become more prevalent. A 2023 survey found that 68% of female athletes welcome mixed practice sessions, citing benefits like increased competition and skill improvement.
