Brock Purdy’s Injury Update: Is He Ready for Week 2? Plus, George Kittle Set to Miss Several Weeks

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with injuries to his toe and left shoulder, making his availability for Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints uncertain, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Purdy’s toe injury appears to be more significant than the shoulder issue. The team will monitor his recovery during practice before deciding if they need to sign a veteran quarterback to back up Mac Jones.

Tight end George Kittle will miss a few weeks due to a hamstring injury that forced him to leave in the second quarter of the recent win against the Seahawks. While there’s a chance he could go on injured reserve, no decision has been made yet, and the team hopes he can return sooner.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings might play against the Saints, but he remains under evaluation. His MRI looked good, and the team is waiting on his CT scan results.

In his first game since signing a big contract, Purdy played all 76 snaps, threw for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He sustained his shoulder injury during a tough tackle in the first half, while the timing of the toe injury is not clear. At just 25, Purdy has a history of injuries, including multiple setbacks to his throwing arm in previous seasons.

If Purdy can’t play, the 49ers will turn to Jones, who has been solid during training and preseason. He has a great rapport with the team’s backup tight ends, who will see increased action with Kittle sidelined. Jones was previously drafted 15th overall by the New England Patriots after the 49ers chose Trey Lance instead. In his rookie season, he completed over 67% of his passes and had impressive yardage.

Last season, Jones stepped in for Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and struggled, leading the team to a 2-5 record. Despite this, he showed flashes of potential.

The 49ers also have Adrian Martinez on the practice squad as their third-string quarterback. He has yet to throw a pass in a regular-season game.

Kittle was a major part of the game plan against the Seahawks. Before his injury, he had four catches for 25 yards and a touchdown. Backup Luke Farrell and rookie Jake Tonges stepped up in his absence, contributing key plays in the game-winning drive.

Kittle, approaching his 32nd birthday, has missed eight games over the past four seasons and had just come off a solid training regimen. The team is hoping for his quick return, especially with other offensive players sidelined.

Jennings had been struggling with injuries throughout training camp and recently adjusted his contract for added incentives. He caught a couple of passes before leaving the last game due to discomfort.

In addition to injury concerns, Shanahan mentioned the team might explore signing a kicker after Jake Moody’s inconsistent field goal performance. Moody has missed several attempts lately, highlighting the need for stability in that position.

As the 49ers navigate these challenges, the focus remains on recovery and preparation for the upcoming games.
