Brock Tessman Bids Farewell to Northern Michigan University: A Reflective Journey and New Beginnings

Brock Tessman’s Farewell from NMU

Brock Tessman recently bid farewell as he wrapped up his role as the 17th president of Northern Michigan University (NMU). After two impactful years, he is heading to Montana State University.

During his time at NMU, Tessman focused on creating a strong budget, boosting enrollment, and improving campus culture. He expressed his gratitude for being part of a place where he felt at home, contributing meaningfully to both the university and the surrounding community.

Emily Lanctot, Director of the DeVos Art Museum, spoke highly of Tessman’s influence. She highlighted how the arts play a crucial role in community well-being, emphasizing that Tessman understood the broader needs of the area rather than just the campus.

Randy Klitzke, an associate professor at NMU, praised Tessman for his leadership and unwavering support of skilled trades. He noted that Tessman’s true impact was in empowering others, fostering teamwork among faculty and students.

Tessman also spearheaded a new strategic plan designed to support students and strengthen community partnerships. He views this plan as a roadmap for both the university and its future leadership.

As he transitions out, Tessman encourages the next president to embrace authenticity. He believes being genuine at work and at home creates a more sustainable approach to leadership.

The NMU Board of Trustees is currently searching for Tessman’s successor, with interim president Gavin Leach overseeing the transition.

Tessman expressed his deep appreciation for the community that welcomed his family, marking the end of a valuable chapter in NMU’s history.

In recent years, university leadership has gained increased attention. A survey by the American Council on Education found that nearly 50% of college presidents planned to retire within the next five years. This makes the search for capable leaders crucial for institutions like NMU.

As communities and universities evolve, the importance of leaders who understand both campus and community needs continues to grow. Tessman’s contributions will leave a lasting legacy as NMU looks ahead to its next chapter.
