Monken, 59, has a solid track record. He spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. During his tenure, he helped Lamar Jackson secure his second MVP title in 2023. Under Monken, the Ravens led in total yards and ranked third in points scored in 2024.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the Browns have worked with Monken. He was their offensive coordinator in 2019 under former head coach Freddie Kitchens. In his previous role, he helped the team strive for improvement, even though Kitchens was the main play-caller.
Before joining the Ravens, Monken had success at the University of Georgia, where he won two national championships as offensive coordinator from 2020-2022. His experience in both college and the NFL gives him a unique perspective on developing talent and strategies.
Monken also has head coaching experience from his time at Southern Miss. From 2013 to 2015, he led the team to a 13-25 record, but the program saw improvement each year, culminating in a 9-5 finish in 2015. This gradual success highlights his ability to build and grow a team.
In looking for a new coach, the Browns considered several candidates, including defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase. Team owner Jimmy Haslam favored keeping Schwartz, and it appears Monken is open to having him as part of the coaching staff.
Had Monken not been hired by the Browns, he might have taken the offensive coordinator role with the New York Giants. Now, the Giants will need to navigate their search for a new candidate.
