Former United Launch Alliance (ULA) CEO Tory Bruno has made a significant shift to Blue Origin, primarily to focus on national security projects. He recently took on the role of president of Blue Origin’s new national security group, a move that surprised many in the space industry.

Their increasing capabilities to position threats in orbit make the need for robust space defense strategies more pressing than ever. “The environment is getting worse, and we’ve got to catch up fast,” he added.
Bruno’s portfolio at Blue Origin includes working on their Blue Ring spacecraft. This highly maneuverable spacecraft is designed for both civil and national security purposes, with a mission slated for launch later this year through a Defense Innovation Unit contract. “It has an enormous amount of delta-v,” he explained, which allows it to adjust its orbit once it reaches its destination.
Incorporating advanced technology, Bruno plans to implement artificial intelligence on the Blue Ring to enhance its autonomy. This means that the spacecraft can operate independently during missions. AI will also play a vital role at ground control centers, aiding operators in managing any anomalies or threats that may arise.

He highlighted other projects like the Blue Moon lunar lander, showcasing the company’s diverse ambitions.
