PITTSBURGH — Before Cristopher Sánchez took the mound against the Pirates, Marcell Ozuna confidently told him he’d hit a home run. It didn’t go so well for Ozuna; he struck out four times as Sánchez led the Phillies to a 6-0 win, racking up a career-high 13 strikeouts.
Sánchez’s impressive performance extended his scoreless streak to 29 ⅔ innings, dating back to April 30. His success made things easier for bench coach Dusty Wathan, who was filling in for interim manager Don Mattingly, away for his son’s graduation.
“Managing is simple when players are on point,” Wathan remarked, and he received plenty of help from stars like Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. After narrowly missing a grand slam the night before, Harper hit a three-run homer, his longest since 2022 at 457 feet. Meanwhile, Schwarber contributed with an RBI double that gave Sánchez a cushion to work with.
Sánchez dominated from the start. He retired 11 consecutive batters before allowing a hit. Notably, he didn’t issue any walks, showing his command. He struck out seven batters with his changeup, four with his sinker, and two with his slider. “His changeup is elite,” Realmuto noted, emphasizing how tough that makes it for hitters.
The Phillies’ defense shined too. Trea Turner made a pivotal double play, and Justin Crawford’s diving catch helped keep the shutout intact. Harper’s skillful pick at first base ended the game, sealing Sánchez’s shutout.
Wathan recalls the early days of Sánchez, who joined the Phillies in 2019. Back then, Sánchez was struggling with control. “He’s made an incredible transformation,” Wathan said, noting how rare such growth is in sports.
After a strong outing, Sánchez had to fight off two singles in the ninth. But he managed to close it out with a strikeout, finishing with 108 pitches.
“I’m proud of myself, but I want to stay grounded,” Sánchez said through an interpreter. He was eager to keep improving.
A large group of Phillies fans filled PNC Park, cheering for Sánchez after the win. “It really felt like a home game,” he shared, clearly moved by the support.
Both Sánchez and Wathan took home mementos after the game. Sánchez saved a ball for his family, and the team gifted Wathan a signed bottle of bourbon for his first win as acting manager.
The victory brought the Phillies to a balanced record of 23-23, marking their first time at .500 since April 13. “Our mindset is to keep competing,” Sánchez stated, emphasizing the importance of consistency.
