At the 2026 American Music Awards, held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 25, seven artists stole the spotlight by winning three awards each. These stars included Bruno Mars, BTS, Cardi B, KATSEYE, Sabrina Carpenter, HUNTR/X, and Sombr.
But it was a tough night for Taylor Swift. Leading the nominations with eight, she left empty-handed. Despite this, Swift holds the record for the most AMAs in history, with 40 wins overall.
BTS was a big winner again, taking home the Artist of the Year award for the second time. They previously won this honor in 2021, making them one of the few repeat winners in this category. Swift has won it seven times, while BTS joins Justin Bieber and One Direction with two wins each.
Also, BTS snagged Song of the Summer for “Swim” and Best Male K-Pop Artist, bringing their total AMAs to 14. They come second among groups, only behind Alabama, which has 23 AMAs.
Justin Bieber was recognized as Best Male Pop Artist, pushing his total AMA wins to 19. This puts him tied with the late Kenny Rogers for second most among male artists. The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, leads with 24 awards.
KATSEYE took home New Artist of the Year. This global girl group had been nominated for a Grammy earlier but didn’t win. With this victory, they extend a trend in the category, as the past seven winners have been female acts. KATSEYE also won Best Music Video and Breakthrough Pop Artist.
HUNTR/X’s “Golden” continued its success by winning Song of the Year, along with Best Vocal Performance and Best Pop Song. This track has already been recognized at major award shows like the Grammys and Oscars.
Sombr also made waves with three wins, including Best Rock/Alternative Song and Best Rock/Alternative Album for *I Barely Know Her*. His surprise win in the album category showed how a breakout single can elevate an artist’s profile.
Bruno Mars, Cardi B, and Sabrina Carpenter were other notable three-time winners. Mars secured Best Male R&B Artist, while Cardi B won in the female hip-hop category. Carpenter took home Album of the Year.
Other artists like Olivia Dean and Lady Gaga, who had a significant number of nominations, also went home without awards, highlighting the unpredictable nature of these shows.
In Latin music, Karol G’s *Tropicoqueta* won Best Latin Album, adding to her accolades. This album has set the stage for her next Grammy consideration.
Twenty One Pilots won Best Rock/Alternative Artist for the fourth time. Only Linkin Park, with six wins, has more in this category, showcasing the duo’s strong presence in the industry.
The new category for Best Throwback Song saw The Black Eyed Peas win for “Rock That Body,” a track from their 2010 album. This change reflects a growing trend to celebrate older hits alongside new releases.
Hosted by Queen Latifah, the AMAs are a significant event in music. This fan-voted award show started in 1974 and has evolved to include streaming data and sales metrics to determine its nominees.
The excitement around the AMAs also showcases the changing landscape of music and how fan interactions influence artist recognition.
