The Milwaukee Bucks have officially waived Cam Thomas, as reported by Shams Charania of ESPN. The Bucks announced this decision in a press release, confirming the move.
This decision might surprise some fans. The Bucks had shown interest in Thomas right after the trade deadline. However, they needed to make room for Pete Nance, who has now signed a multiyear standard contract after previously being on a two-way deal.
It’s essential to understand why this change happened. Thomas was on a minimum-salary contract for the rest of the season, making it easier for the Bucks to let him go if he wasn’t part of their long-term plans.
General Manager Jon Horst had initially pitched Thomas as an essential piece for the team’s present and future. Coach Doc Rivers even compared him to past Sixth Man of the Year winners like Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams.
However, Thomas may have wanted a fresh start. His minutes were down to 16.6 per game with the Bucks compared to 24.3 with the Nets. He also faced two “Did Not Play – Coach’s Decision” games last week. Interestingly, he had asked the Nets to waive him just the month before this move.
During his time with the Bucks, Thomas averaged 10.6 points, 1.9 assists, and 1.6 rebounds in 18 games. Despite his offensive talent, he struggled defensively and had issues with turnovers.
If Thomas clears waivers, the Bucks will have a dead-money cap hit of $844,607. He will become a free agent but won’t be eligible to play in the playoffs since he was released after March 1.
If another team claims him, they’ll take over his salary, and the Bucks will no longer have to account for it. However, he will still be ineligible for the postseason.
