ERIE — The University of Colorado men’s golf team faced a familiar disappointment at the 15th annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational, finishing in second place for the fourth consecutive year. Arkansas State claimed the title with a score of 42-under par 822, just one stroke ahead of the Buffaloes, who ended at 41-under 823. Long Beach State trailed closely behind at 40-under 824.
This year’s tournament showcased impressive performances from all three teams. The Buffaloes started strong, posting the lowest score of the event in the first round with a remarkable 20-under 268. They maintained their lead but couldn’t quite hold on as Arkansas State mounted a late challenge.
“Today was an incredible battle,” said head coach Roy Edwards. “Every player showed great skill and competitiveness. We came up just short, but Arkansas State is a solid team.”
Despite the heartbreak, it’s worth noting that finishing second in a major golf tournament is still a commendable achievement. This runner-up spot marks the Buffaloes’ 12th in 42 competitions since the 2022-2023 season, complemented by an impressive record of 23 top-three finishes, including two wins.
Sophomore Parker Paxton shone brightly, tying for third place with a career-best score of 13-under 203. His rounds of 66-69-68 highlighted his skill, as he became just the 22nd player in CU history to record three straight rounds in the 60s.
“It hurts to be so close,” Paxton remarked. “But this team is competitive and we’ll keep pushing forward.”
Junior Brandon Knight also stood out, tying for fifth with a final score of 11-under 205, while junior Ty Holbrook tied for seventh with a score of 10-under 206.
The Buffaloes made history in another way: all eight players finished the tournament under par. This rare feat is a testament to their collective talent and depth.
Freshman Tyler Long made his mark by tying for 14th in his first scoring event, setting school records for gross score (7-under 209) and score in relation to par for a first-time scorer.
Arkansas State’s Thomas Schmidt took individual honors with a record-setting 22-under 194, breaking the old mark of 15-under set in 2021.
Looking ahead, the Buffaloes will take their competitive spirit to the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational from October 9-11, eager to turn their near-misses into victories.
The tournament attracted attention not just for the scores, but also for the camaraderie amongst teams and the rising talent. Even on social media, players shared their excitement and enthusiasm for the competition and the sportsmanship displayed throughout the event.
